...Well, not actually 5 downs per se, but this should obviously be a situation where a penalty should not help the offending team.

Text Version: -

1-10-CBR 10 (5:56) 18-Brian Armstrong sacked at CBR 4 for -6 yards (93-Clarence Gilkes). Sack allowed by 60-Michael Smith

2-16-CBR 4 (5:17) 47-Leo Crabtree ran to CBR 1 for -2 yards. Tackle by 44-John Gonzalez. PENALTY - Holding (CBR 20-Allen Morrow)

2-18-CBR 2 (5:14) 47-Leo Crabtree ran to CBR 4 for 3 yards. Tackle by 29-Rudolph Ferguson.

3-15-CBR 4 (4:38) 18-Brian Armstrong pass incomplete, intended for 88-Timothy Chapman. Pass knocked down by 41-James Smith. Pressure by 93-Clarence Gilkes.

4-15-CBR 4 (4:32) 14-James McMillan punts 59 yards to POR 37.

Not a complaint, not a ***** at the game....just highlighting a glaringly obvious fault in Penalty enforcement.

Only a couple of times...eh? :P

As you know, I ref quite a bit, and if Team B (defense) captain wanted the enforcement I would usher him to the sideline to have the HC administer a concussion protocol.

2nd & 18 vs 3rd & 18...do the math on that. lol

Since it was a play for lost yardage, I would have declined the penalty, but NFL rules says I can't and the play must be replayed with penalty yards added

A penalty called when an offense player grabs onto a defensive player in order to impede his progress or gain an advantage. Holding is called when the player does not use a proper open-handed blocking technique. The 10-yard penalty is assessed from the previous line of scrimmage, and the down is replayed.

If I am I am but going by NFL rule book Section 12-1-3
https://operations.nfl.com/the-rules/2017-nfl-rulebook/#article-3.-illegal-block-by-offensive-player
Penalty: For holding by the offense: Loss of 10 yards.
Notice, it does not say option to decline

Allow me to send you on a journey of the NCAA & NFL Rule book.....The penalty in question is an auto-declined. The WC is not even looking for the HC's approval.

It is late where I am, but I might choose to further correct you on this Booger.

I can assure you that you are wrong in your ruling.

The penalty is properly enforced as a half-the-distance to the goal, but the bug is that the penalty should have been declined in this case since accepting it does actually give the offense an extra down.
